A music stand is an essential accessory for any musician and while they all serve the same purpose, they do vary in design, practicality and price.

Using the stand at home

Generally, any old cheap music stand will do the job. Recently, I have performed in Valencia, Spain and there were no practice rooms available anywhere. I had to use a room in the hotel basement and used a chair for a music stand so it is possible to just cope without one.

For good proper practice however, a sturdy music stand is essential. Ideally one that can be easily adjusted for sitting or standing and one that will take the weight of the music. Baring in mind nowadays we often use an iPad for music notation or might have larger study books, so having a stand that won't collapse is a good idea.

The concert hall style music stands are the best but these are not practical as they cannot fold up. The basic metal music stands are okay but often the screws stop tightening or they get bent out of shape.

I've been lucky enough to test the Kraft Geek Capsule music stand. I've used it for home practice and I've also used it for live performances and teaching in schools. It has had a proper test, been thrown around a bit in and out of my car and been played with by some children I teach, it has performed amazingly, such high quality product that will last forever. While the product is a bit expensive, it is a brilliant stand that I highly recommend.

Live performance in schools

You can purchase a phone holder and attachable light and it has a very good quality carry bag with space for the stand and accessories. I love it and colleagues have noticed it and been curious about it.

My version is white but you can also get a black version. I like that it has a smooth, grippy sort of material where the music is placed and you can also use the built in clips to help, especially if you were performing outside.

The light and phone holder attaches easily to the stand and would be perfect for playing in a pit orchestra or just any concert where a little extra light is needed. The phone holder is handy as well, especially for teaching because you can quickly use a metronome or tuning app. Obviously, some schools might not allow the use of a personal mobile phone, so always check that before using a phone in a school setting.

Out of all the musical activities I do, I have found this stand to be best for teaching. It is light and easy to carry in the bag and children can set the stand up easily without trapping their fingers. Plus, it just looks really modern and a bit space age.

The stand is suitable for standing or seated practice because it lifts up high and I am going to continue to use this stand almost every day, I recommend it to anyone.
