As A Musician, What Can I Learn From Eminem?

Eminem, whose real name is Marshall Mathers, is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential rappers of all time. All musicians can learn several valuable lessons from Eminem's career.

Eminem what to learn from

Authenticity and Honesty

Eminem is known for being brutally honest and transparent in his lyrics. Musicians can learn the power of authenticity and how connecting with audiences on a personal level can make a significant impact. If what you do offends people, it can sometimes work in your favour and gain you publicity but always be careful. Be honest about what you want to do and do not want to do and find ways to perform to your strengths. Honesty is also essential when dealing with agents, venues and other professionals.

Determination and Resilience

Eminem faced numerous challenges and setbacks early in his career, but he persevered with determination. His upbringing was marked by poverty, family issues, and bullying. His troubled relationship with his mother and the absence of his father contributed to a difficult and unstable home life. Musicians can learn the importance of resilience and persistence in the face of adversity. You won't always win the competition or the audition. Pick yourself up and keep trying. Accept that mistakes may happen as a musician and do not let them knock you off course, all the very best musicians have made some along the way.

Storytelling

Eminem is a master storyteller. His ability to craft intricate narratives and convey emotions through his lyrics is a skill that aspiring musicians can develop. Effective storytelling enhances the connection with listeners but it doesn't only have to apply to vocalists. As an instrumentalist, it is important to create a picture, create an emotion and tell a story through the musical notes you play. Even if the piece of music you are learning is a study, or a piece without a thought provoking or creative title, you can still use your imagination to think about how the music should make people feel.

Versatility

Eminem has shown versatility in his music, experimenting with different styles, tones, and themes. Musicians can learn the importance of being versatile and adaptable in their craft to stay relevant and reach a broader audience. When I lived in Dubai, there were not many musical opportunities but I ended up playing in an October Fest style ensemble called The Bavarian Camels. I also played in an Arabic fusion ensemble, I had to adapt and find opportunities that my instrument wouldn't normally have. As a brass player, I find it useful to learn cello or clarinet music. It is so different to euphonium music and makes me a better musician.

Work Ethic

Eminem is known for his intense work ethic. Musicians can learn the value of hard work, dedication, and consistently honing their craft to achieve success in the competitive music industry. Someone is always working harder than you. Raise your game if you want to improve. What about setting some New Years resolutions?

Understanding Your Audience

Eminem has a deep understanding of his audience and knows how to communicate with them effectively. Musicians can benefit from understanding their target audience and tailoring their music and marketing strategies accordingly. Sometimes you have to perform music that you personally do not like, but you select that music because you know the audience will love it. Put the audience first.

Social Commentary

Eminem often addresses social issues and challenges through his music. Musicians can learn the impact of using their platform to address relevant social and political issues, resonating with listeners beyond just entertainment. If you are a more established musician or are involved in teaching in any form, you have a duty to inspire and be a good role model for those around you. If you have any opportunity to teach young people to be kinder to each other, it will help society a huge amount in the years to come.

Entrepreneurship

Eminem has been involved in various business ventures, including his own record label. Musicians can learn about the importance of diversifying income streams, building a brand, and taking an entrepreneurial approach to their careers. The average musician probably isn't making a huge amount of money (in comparison to Eminem). You have to learn to find other ways to make money, so you can keep doing what you love. Even if some other jobs are not even music related. Teaching is a great source of income but there are so many ways you can make money online nowadays. Take a look at Roamler and Outplayed. These are some ways I make a little extra money on the side outside of music.

Constant Improvement

Eminem has consistently pushed himself to improve as an artist. Musicians can learn the value of self-reflection, continuous learning, and striving for improvement in their skills and artistry. Practice makes perfect and dedicating a chunk of your time every day or every week is essential if you are going to improve.

Individuality

Eminem has always been unapologetically himself, embracing his unique style and personality. Musicians can learn the importance of embracing their individuality and not conforming to industry norms, allowing their authenticity to shine through.

Some of Eminem's influences include The Beastie Boys and Run-DMC. It is vital to take inspiration from other artists and let those influences run through you, this is how musicians can evolve.

Sometimes we all find it tricky not to listen to our subconscious minds when it starts comparing us to others but you have to train yourself bit by bit to stay present, believe in yourself and take all competition out of the equation.

While Eminem's style and approach may not resonate with everyone, there's no denying his impact on the music industry. Musicians can draw inspiration from his journey, learning both from his successes and challenges.

Good Luck! ❤
